This isn’t “self-defense” ammo in the traditional sense. While we have little doubt that the 9mm +P+ could capably neutralize a human-size assailant, it’s not ideal for that application. That’s largely because its full metal jacket flat point projectile is not designed for terminal expansion, and is pretty much certain to pass clean through a man.
But if you’re defending yourself against a black bear or bellicose boar, then this American-made ammo will do you right. Its heavyweight 147 grain projectile’s 1,175 fps muzzle velocity gives it striking energy akin to a 40 S&W bullet. And because the FMJ FP’s profile promotes deeper penetration – accompanied by greater soft tissue damage than a conventional round nose bullet could achieve – it’s a good pick for putting down thick and armored beasts. The round’s match accuracy certainly won’t hurt while you’re aiming in defense of your life.
