This is top of the line, American-made range ammo - it doesn't get any better.

According to Federal's website, the muzzle velocity on this cartridge is 1,000 FPS.

Today, I'd like to talk about American Eagle subsonic 9mm ammunition. This is loaded with over 147 grain, full metal jacket, flat-point bullets made by the Federal Cartridge Company in Anoka, Minnesota. Federal is part of the ATK family of companies. Federal makes a lot of ammunition for both law enforcement and military applications, and though this is commercial ammo, it's held to the same high standards.

This ammo was made to be subsonic, which means that it travels for the speed of sound. To test this, I put this through a suppressed pistol. With a suppressor, it's very simple to tell what's subsonic and what's not because you can hear the supersonic crack if it breaks the sound barrier. This being said, this ammunition was some of the quietest I've ever fired in my pistol. As another test of its velocity, I chronographed this in both 4 and 5-inch barrel pistols.

Throughout the test, I noticed that this ammo was very clean and didn't leave behind much residue. This is important with any ammunition, but using a suppressor makes this much more noticeable. The suppressed firemen that I tried this with was a CZ SP-01, though I tried it unsuppressed, as well. The other firearms were a Glock 19, a Ruger LC-9, a Ruger SR-9, a Kimber 1911, and a Browning Hi-Power. Not only were there not any issues with reliability, but it was also very easy to shoot and extremely accurate.

If you carry 147 grain hollow-points, buying this ammunition provides another benefit in that will recoil and perform very similarly, and practicing for defense will be much more effective. I think that this ammo was a great choice for those who need reliable 147 grain 9mm load, or for those who carry 147s and want to practice for defense. It's also a great choice for general shooting because of the accuracy and low recoil of the 147 grain bullet.

This stuff is great.
Same velocity, same muzzle velocity, same point of impact as my carry ammo, 147gr HST.
Realistic practice ammo.
In addition, is low flash and clean burning.

I use this in my suppressed CZ Scorpion with the 7.72" barrel, and it functions very well. I probably have 600 rounds or so through the gun with no malfunctions. Also worked well in my suppressed Sig P226 for the 130 rounds or so I put through it.

Received my 1,000 rd purchase on Wed & went to the range on Thur. Made this purchase to use with my Beretta Nano that I bought new at a FL gun show 3 wks ago. The reviews on the Nano indicate many FTE problems when the pistol was intoduced. The problem seemed to be caused by using 115 gr ammo. The suggestion was made by many shooters to use 124 gr or heavier bullets to break the gun in since it was designed to be a 40 cal pistol. Unfortunately it was only produced in 9mm. After shooting several hundred rds the past 2 wks I tried the American Eagle 147 gr rds. I can't believe the difference & inprovement I saw. The recoil seemed less & the accuracy was better. I also tried these rds in my Springfield XDM-9 with an even better grouping accuracy. Overall these bullets are great for my pistols. The price from Lucky Gunner was terrific, just slightly more than Remington 115's & the Winchester Nato 124's that I had been using. If LG can maintain or lower the price I will definitely be back to order more in the future.

I selected this round to be a cheaper practice round in lieu of more expensive hollow points. I used LuckyGunner's ballistic gelatin test to select an affordable 9mm HD round with good expansion. Between 147gn Rem Golden Saber and 115gn Speer Gold Dot, they both grouped well at 7yds. The Golden Saber grouped slightly better for me so I chose Federal AE 147gn within 10 fps as an equivalent practice and target round. It's performed well in that role.

No complaints on my recent purchase of 9mm - 147 gr FMJ FN - Federal American Eagle. I usually buy the cheap stuff (115 gr) but couldn't pass up the deal on a 147 gr. This was my first time shooting anything other than 115 gr in both my Glock 17 and 43 and I can say the heavier gr shoots better; a fun experiment for me. I'm partial to Federal/ American Eagle due to their support of the gun community and I'll definitely be placing many more orders with Lucky Gunner. Great YouTube vids by the way LG crew! Like the extra "punch" of the 147 gr. Runs well through old faithful Glock 17. Not a professional and I did not stay in a Holiday Inn Express last night but these rounds rock. Smooth, no misfires or jams. Great price and service from Lucky Gunner as always.

I have always shot AE ammo and the 147gr are good ammo. I have not had any issues with these ammo thus far. I will be placing more purchase in the near future when I finish shooting the 1000 bulk that I had just purchase. Great price and fast shipping.

My suppressed AR-9 sub gun with 5" barrel shoots this ammo accurately out to 50 yards and functions perfectly. Every weapon has it's likes and dislikes but this is best I have found. Great sub-sonic practice ammo.

Same boat, I run gold dot for home protection but this is great training ammo. I only encountered one stove pipe in a Glock 19 due to the user having a weak grip, not due to failure of ammo. I would recommend this to anyone.

I have shot over 3,000 rounds through a Glock 19 with no misfires.

I have HP Gold Dot for home protection but this is best training ammo that I have used. Happy shooting!

I have shot several brands of 9mm ammo at various weights, and I think that this ammo is awesome for competition shooting if you don't have a re-loader.

I can't recall ever having a jam or a misfire that was due to the ammo itself.
i have shot nearly 12000 rounds through my Springfield XDM and the American Eagle ammo is by far the cleanest, and best priced ammo i have shot with it.

Fired a few hundred rounds though Beretta 90Two and performance and accuracy is much better then the other ammo I was buying. Gun isn't as dirty like it was from the UMC bulk box I was using.

Q: If I carry Federal premium 147 grain HST for EDC, Would this ammunition be good training ammunition to use. As a new shooter all of this can be confusing. Should you match grain weight and velocity of your carry ammunition and training ammunition?

A: Thanks for reaching out Kyle. This would make excellent training ammo if you carry Federal HST 147gr JHP ammo. Like you suspect, it is ideal to train with ammo that shares the same bullet weight and muzzle velocity as your carry load. Better yet, this ammo is made by the same manufacturer, and American Eagle is intended to emulate the recoil, point of aim and ballistic performance of Federal's self-defense lines of ammunition. This ammo will not perform identically to the HST loads; only analogously. Even so, you will find that its performance is about as similar to HST as you can get – the next best thing to training with the HST ammo itself.

Q: How do these sounded suppressed? Do they stay subsonic?

A: Thanks for reaching out Thomas! A suppressor does increase a cartridge's muzzle velocity, but that increase is typically negligible. This round's 1,000 fps muzzle velocity (4" test barrel) will certainly not increase to supersonic (~1,125 fps) in conjunction with a suppressor. To that end you can expect this ammo to complement your suppressor's performance quite nicely, emitting a far softer, crack-free report on ignition. I expect you will be quite satisfied, although I must say that Federal's Syntech Action Pistol series ammo is outstanding for how clean keeps a suppressor's baffles: luckygunner.com/9mm-150-grain-total-synthetic-jacket-tsj-federal-american-eagle-syntech-500-rounds
