Ballistics Test Summary

After firing five rounds of Winchester 127 gr Ranger T-Series +P+ from a Smith & Wesson M&P9c into synthetic ballistic gelatin from 10 feet away through four layers of fabric to simulate clothing, we then measured the expansion and penetration of the bullets for this 9mm Luger (9x19) load, which you can see in the chart below.

The photos below provide a detailed view of the the expanded bullets that were recovered from the gelatin. The high speed video shows the first of our five shots as it entered the gel.

Q: Can these rounds be fired safely in a glock 43?

A: Thanks for reaching out John! Glock does not recommend firing 9mm +P+ ammo in their handguns. You're safe with 9mm +P, though!

Q: Great website. Thank you. What length barrel are these shot from? In the ballistics test 3 out of 5 rounds did not expand. That worries me - I have been using this Win 127gr +P+ as my carry ammo and I would expect every round to expand properly under controlled conditions such as a ballistics test? Most of the other bullets expanded properly. Maybe the load is too hot or something - I noticed that only Winchestster 147Gr seem to expand properly and of those all way over-penetrate according to the FBI standard of 18" . I am looking for the ideal carry round for a Sig P365 and also for a M&P Shield which also has a short barrel. Thank you.

A: Thanks for reaching out Andrew! I've written to Winchester asking for the length of the test barrel they used to record this round's ballistic data. (I wish they had included that upfront.) If your handgun has a short barrel, it is possible that it is not giving the bullet enough muzzle velocity to effect full terminal expansion, although I really can't say for certain with so little info to go on. That said, Speer Gold Dot Short Barrel is excellent for handguns for shorter barrels, as the cartridge is designed to still satisfy the FBI test protocol when fired in a handgun with a shorter barrel. We haven't got any in stock at the moment, but I'd recommend taking a look:
