A: Thanks for reaching out Banning! Federal Premium recorded this round's 1,150 fps muzzle velocity with a 4" test barrel. You can rightly expect a lower muzzle velocity from a 3.1" barrel. There's no way for me to accurately calculate what kind of muzzle velocity you would actually get from your handgun. That said, I expect you'd get no less than 1,050 fps, and that's being conservative. All that means is that you can expect effective terminal expanison within the range reasonably associated with self-defense. As for cycling, I foresee no reason why Federal's highest-quality line of self-defense ammo shouldn't function well in your SIG.

A: Thanks for reaching out Joshua! All of the 9mm's three major bullet weights should function correctly inside your G19C. The bullet weight you should select for self-defense is largely a matter of personal preference. Many shooters like the lightweight 115gr bullet because they feel less recoil and notice a flatter trajectory. Many prefer the heavyweight 147gr bullet because they believe it will penetrate the threat more deeply – and that belief isn't unfounded. Many others prefer taking the middle ground with the 124gr projectile. At the end of the day, the best bullet weight is the one you feel most comfortable firing. I advise trying all three out and seeing for yourself. If you were to solely rely on my opinion, then I would recommend 147gr, as I belong to the camp which believes the heavier bullet's terminal ballistics are slightly more effective for defensive applications. Please let me know if you've any other questions!

A: Thanks for reaching out Ben! So long as ammo is stored in proper conditions (stable temperature, low humidity/moisture, no exposure to light), ammo can theoretically last indefinitely – absolutely for the duration of your lifetime. We just recently sold WWI military surplus that still worked great (and I didn't forget to add an "I" to WWI). I recommend storing ammo in ammo cans with silica gel desiccant. We've got some great desiccant and military spec cans in stock right now: https://www.luckygunner.com/accessories/ammo-cans

A: Thanks for reaching out Ryan! I can't account for what the fella says in the YouTube video. What I can tell you is what Federal Premium confirmed to me personally: It is the same exact ammo, just with different packaging.

A: No sir, this isn't Federal's HST Micro series ammunition. We haven't currently got it in stock. We do update our inventory frequently, so I hope you'll check back in again soon, but the product number for what you're looking for is P9HST5S in case you'd rather look elsewhere.

A: Yes sir, this ammo's cases are indeed nickel-plated. We're no stranger to the phenomenon of manufacturers momentarily suspending nickel plating, and we update our product pages to reflect when a batch of ammo is nickel-less. But in this case, the ammo you'll receive does have nickel-plated cases as pictured.

A: No sir! It's not surplus or previously loaded in cops' magazines. This is new production ammo straight from the factory. Federal Premium does manufacture this ammunition for law enforcement applications, but they also make it directly available to the commercial market.

A: Thanks for reaching out George! It's always possible that ammo will function better in one handgun over the next, but this and the other Fedeal 9mm ammo you asked about should both work very well in your Springfield and S&W.

A: Yes sir, absolutely. This ammo has high-quality brass cases with Boxer primer pockets. The cases are nickel-plated – that's not a big problem, but I'd recommend reading up on reloading nickel-plated brass just in case you haven't yet:

By: Mike
A: Thanks for reaching out Mike! Personally, I don't find the added muzzle velocity of 9mm +P all that helpful. And since bullet weight primarily comes down to personal preference, I can tell you I do prefer 124gr over 147gr. That makes this an easy recommendation: I'd select the 9mm 124gr ammo for my own 9mm sefl-defense handgun. As a matter of fact, that is what I currently have loaded in its magazine.

A: Hello John! This is great ammo and it should function very well in your handgun. This fella on YouTube tested this exact ammo in his M&P Shield and found that it works excellent: youtube.com/watch?v=sMyGhLuXYXQ. (He actually fires it at 3:46, and in the end you can see just how uniformly the HST expands in ballistic gel.)

A: Hi David! You'll be happy to hear that this is excellent ammunition for the P229 Legion. Our reviewer Chris Baker actually tested that handgun out and got the best results with this exact ammo. You can read his full review here: luckygunner.com/lounge/sig-sauer-p229-legion-series-review/

A: We haven't tested this ammunition in the Micro 9 personally, but this review by Guns & Ammo does have good things to say about it: gunsandammo.com/editorial/new-micro-9-hits-hard-and-carries-easy/247996. Personal Defense World seems to share that positive opinion: personaldefenseworld.com/2018/02/kimber-micro-9-desert-tan-pistol (although they used +P rounds for their review.

A: Excellent selection for self-defense with a P-07! Federal developed the HST projectile specifically for law enforcement, and at first cops were the only ones who could even get it. It penetrates and expands within its target extremely reliably. The only other 9mm self-defense ammo we offer that's in the HST's league is Speer's Gold Dot: luckygunner.com/9mm-124-grain-jhp-speer-gold-dot-50-rounds. The Gold Dot bullet's jacket and core are bonded to promote deeper penetration, and its hollow point nose cavity is programmed for highly uniform expansion. Either round should serve you splendidly if you ever had to count on one of them for self-defense.

By: Jeffrey Lang
A: Hello Jeffrey! Federal's own ballistic data for this ammo were gathered from a 4" test barrel. We haven't tested this ammo ourselves, and I can't promise how great a difference there would be in expansion with a one inch shorter barrel, but I can pretty confidently say this bullet will still expand consistently out of a conpact Shield.

A: Hi Walt! We can legally ship hollow point ammunition to you in New Jersey
Before I answer your second question, let me stress that I am definitely not giving you legal advice here. That said, it's my undstanding that you can legally own hollow point ammo in New Jersey, but you can't leave your home with it. There are exceptions for hunting and target practice. You can get a much, much better explanation on the NJSP's own website: njsp.org/firearms/transport-hollowpoint.shtml

By: Stuart smith
A: Hello Stuart! Either round will function correctly in the P365. Personally, I prefer +P for self-defense, just because I appreciate knowing there would be an extra little bit of energy behind my shots. Overpressure loads will wear a semi-auto down more quickly, it's true, but I don't intend to defend myself so much that my carry weapon will fall apart in the process! Truth is, either round will prove of inestimable value during a self-defense scenario. But if you'd also take comfort knowing that your shots will carry a tiny bit extra punch, then you'd do well with the +P loads as well.

By: Travis Morgan
A: Hello, Travis! HST is the brand name Federal chose for a line of ammunition they developed for law enforcement officers in 2002. The letters themselves don't actually stand for anything. An HST bullet is designed to reliably and rapidly expand to the shape of a six-pointed star when it enters soft tissue, and excels at the test developed by the FBI to determine the efficacy of self-defense ammunition. In short, when ammo bears the name "HST," it means it's super-effective for self-defense.
