A: That's right Momo! No badge required to buy this ammo. As a matter of fact, Federal often sells this same exact ammo to the general public with different packaging.

A: Thanks for reaching out! You will notice that cheaper ammunition is loaded with full metal jacket (FMJ) projectiles. The FMJ is a solid lead core with a harder metal coating. This relatively simple design for a bullet permits smooth feeding in a semi-automatic firearm and poses some other performance advantages. What an FMJ cannot do, however, is expand while penetrating soft tissue.
The jacketed hollow point (JHP) is a more heavily engineered bullet – hence its higher price tag – and it is designed for terminal expansion. Terminal expansion creates a wider wound channel and exerts more energy outward instead of merely forward. This equips it to deal greater damage to the threat. It also poses a reduced risk of overpenetration which could jeopardize an innocent bystander.
JHP ammo is also usually loaded in accordance with higher standards for quality, as manufacturers understand their customers may rely on it to defend their lives one day. This is not to suggest that FMJ ammo is necessarily low quality, but its failure to feed, fire or extract should not create a life-threatening problem.
In short, you should select FMJ ammo for target practice and keep JHP ammo loaded in a firearm you would use for personal protection.
