This cartridge has a somewhat unique bullet: a soft point cutting edge. Like any other soft point, its copper-alloy jacket reveals its supple lead core so it can deliver terminal expansion following impact. Unlike a conventional soft point, the SPCE features an angular shoulder which punches out a more injurious entry wound during initial penetration. The SPCE’s cutting edge also mechanically locks its core to its jacket, which keeps the components more firmly rooted together so as to reduce fragmentation, conserve momentum, and promote deeper, deadlier penetration.
Sellier & Bellot recorded this round’s 2,526 fps muzzle velocity with a 23.5” test barrel. At that rate, the 173 grain SPCE attains a 0.376 G1 ballistic coefficient (or more accurately a 0.189 G7 BC, because the bullet does have a boat tail).
This ammo is noncorrosive and reloadable. Sellier & Bellot doesn’t load their standard hunting cartridges with match brass, but it’s still perfectly serviceable if you want to make your own 7x64mm ammo at home.
