While often thought of as a weapon of war, Mosin Nagant rifles have served hunters well not only in Russia but around the world. This 7.62x54R ammunition from Barnaul's Silver Bear series is an excellent choice for such a purpose, as it fires a soft point bullet designed to expand and bring down deer and other game quickly without fragmenting and ruining meat or trophies.

Each cartridge in this box of 20 fires a 203-grain soft point bullet at a muzzle velocity of 2,306 feet per second. While not the flattest shooting load, these rounds deliver very strong penetration thanks to the high weight of the projectile and can bring down most non-dangerous North American game with a well-placed shot.

The Barnaul Machine Plant is named for its home city of Barnaul, Russia. Known for producing much of the ammo used by Soviet forces during World War II, Barnaul is now a private company that produces the Bear ammo brand among other shooting related products. Silver Bear ammo uses zinc plated steel cases and non-corrosive Berdan primers.

Q: Is this ammunition magnetic

A: Hi Joel. This will be magnetic ammo. It is a great round and very consistent and accurate, but unfortunately the casing will attract a magnet . Give me a shout and we can get you some 7.62x54 you can use! 800-317-9506

Q: What's the difference between these and the standard Brown Bear ammo? Are these silver entirely because it's cool?

A: Hi Jared! Thanks for your question. The BEAR series is a line of hunting ammunition. The cartridges are lead cored, have steel cases with Berdan primers, and have non-corrosive propellant and primers. The different sub-brands are different only in the coating used on the outer case. Brown Bear ammunition cartridges have a brown lacquer coating. Silver Bear ammunition cartridges have a zinc coating. Golden Bear ammunition cartridges have a brass coating on the steel case. So, although we do think they're cool, that's not the only reason. It's just a preference choice for the shooter.
