A: That's a great question Jamal!
The preferred bullet for self-defense has a hollow point or polymer tip, either one of which enables the bullet to expand within soft tissue. That makes a much bigger wound cavity, which you can imagine is not very good for a threat's internal organs.
An FMJ bullet like this round's can tumble around a little in soft tissue, but it's ultimately incapable of expansion. That said, this ammo functions more or less identically to what Russian soldiers would have used to fight wars from 1949 until last decade. It's more than powerful enough to quickly neutralize a threat, even without terminal expansion.
Considering that, the only reason I'd discourage using this ammo for self-defense is for its reliability. This is more accessibly priced ammo that's better suited for the range where a jam or failure to fire won't matter too much in the grand scheme of things. That's why I would recommend Prvi Partizan's 7.62x39 ammo over MAXXTech's for self-defense. They're a longer established manufacturer with a better reputation for quality than MAXXTech, so you can count on it with greater confidence during a self-defense scenario. It also has brass cases, which are generally just more reliable than steel.

A: This particular ammo is essentially interchangeable with Tula and Red Army, since MAXXTech has it made in Russia by a similar manufacturer. You can actually see a photo of the factory here: http://khabexport.com/en/exporters/amurskiy-patronnyy-zavod-vympel/.

A: Thanks for reaching out David! I'm not going to lie and say this is premium ammunition – steel cases fail to extract more often than brass ones, and they permit more carbon fouling of the action. That said, I believe a good condition Mini Thirty should eat this ammo up no problem!

A: This round's steel case is lacquer-coated to reduce friction and stave off corrosion during storage.
