We bill this as “self-defense” ammo, but make no mistake: It’s strictly intended for defense against dangerous game. The cartridge’s enormous 440 grain bullet is a hard cast. It’s mostly made of lead, although it’s alloyed with other metals that make it WAY harder than regular lead. The hard cast bullet accordingly avoids deformation as it pierces dense body mass, thus enabling it to tunnel deep enough to reach even the largest animal brute’s vital organs.
This round’s bullet isn’t just a hard cast. It has a flat nose, which enables it to press a wide, damaging hole through soft tissue. It ends in a “gas check” – a softer brass disc, which forms a seal against the bore so as to promote more efficient ignition (and a higher muzzle velocity as a result). It is also coated in “Black Cherry” polymer, which reduces fouling and friction alike.
Underwood’s sparkling nickel-plated brass cases reduce the risk of corrosion, and also reduce friction that could have slowed release from a cylinder. The American company’s low-flash propellant is always a good idea, as it emits less blinding light in the darkness. You really want to be able to see your target – especially if you didn’t drop it in the first shot.
