Federal Champion 5.56x45 ammunition is a swell pick if you’re only shooting paper or steel. But if you plan on pointing your barrel in the exact direction of a chirping rodent or slinking coyote, then you’ll like what its bullet can do (which is to say that the rodent or coyote will not like it one bit).

This cartridge’s bullet weighs the standard 55 grains, although its muzzle velocity sits at an even 3,000 fps instead of the usual 3,240 fps. What does that mean? Ever so slightly gentler recoil, but still a flat trajectory. By our measure the bullet ought to hit a 150-yard target without having to fly higher than 1.37” above the barrel.

The jacketed soft point does not have an especially complicated design for a bullet. It is essentially an FMJ, minus the small portion of jacket which would have covered its lead core’s tip. As such the JSP is suitable for high-volume target shooting, but it’s also capable of undergoing terminal expansion after tearing through a small quarry’s thin hide.

Federal’s centerfire rifle cartridges are always nonmagnetic, always brass-cased and reloadable, always noncorrosive and always American-made. Have some!
