Loaded with a 55 grain FMJ bullet and to a muzzle velocity of 3,270 fps, it’s nearly indistinguishable from the Army’s M193 ball round. The aerodynamic FMJ bullet will remain supersonic way, way beyond the 5.56’s effective range, and its ability to transfer over 450 ft lbs of energy at 400 yards makes it effective for self-defense even if it can’t offer terminal expansion. Where the FMJ’s cost-effective design excels is in its reliability – easy feeding, low lead fouling, and target grade accuracy.
