A: Thanks for reaching out James! This wouldn't be my first choice for home defense. The open tip match bullet is designed solely for accuracy, and this ammo is made for military sniper teams. For home defense you really want a bullet that is designed to expand outward after striking a soft medium. Terminal expansion inflicts a wider wound channel, transfers more destructive energy to the target, and reduces the risk of overpenetration that could jeopardize an innocent bystander. If you specifically want good 5.56 for home defense, then I'd recommend Black Hills' Dual Performance ammo: https://www.luckygunner.com/5-56x45-62-grain-dual-performance-black-hills-50-rounds. If you're open to 223 (which any 5.56 firearm can fire), then I expect you will be satisfied with Federal Premium Law Enforcement Tactical Ballistic Tip ammo: https://www.luckygunner.com/223-rem-55-grain-nosler-ballistic-tip-federal-le-tactical-tru-20-rounds

A: While there are few cartridges that outperform the Black Hills match ammo, any OTM bullet for any brand, is a very poor choice for hunting anything larger than varmints. The projectile is not designed to penetrate or hold its weight upon penetration but rather to give sheer accuracy. You will want to choose a round that is specifically designed for hunting. Give me a shout and we will find you a much more effective round that is right for you. Ross
