We only advertise this as “self-defense” ammo to folks who might use a Magnum Research BFR as a bear deterrent. For the rest of us, Underwood has made a real special solution to taking all kinds of medium and large game with any 45-70 Government firearm (excluding Trapdoors)!
This cartridge’s bullet is a mouthful: “long flat nose hard cast gas check.” Basically, the bullet is made of heavily alloyed lead which is too hard to mushroom or even deform. That enables the bullet to bore deeply through flesh and bone, as does its flat nose profile (which heavily damages any flesh it stamps into). The bullet’s gas check sits at its base, where it creates a more efficient seal against the bore – a feature which promotes higher muzzle velocity. And thanks to its “Black Cherry” polymer coating, the projectile creates impressively little friction and fouling as it glides across the rifling.
This ammo’s reloadable brass cases are plated with nickel. That reduces metal-on-metal friction – smoother operation – and also shields the brass against chemical forces that could corrode it. Underwood’s low-flash propellant is of especial value to handgun hunters/defenders, as it prevents bright muzzle flash from blinding them at dusk or night.
