This cartridge’s bullet weighs an almost classic 400 grains, which makes it light enough to clear a 24” barrel’s muzzle at a velocity of 1,715 fps. (If your barrel is 18”, then you can expect a lower MV of 1,595 fps instead.) The bullet’s 0.246 G1 BC isn’t that high compared to the more modern cartridges, but it’ll still give you a decently flat trajectory: one that drops about -30.1” after coasting 100 yards downrange of a 200 yard zero. The bullet still holds on to over 1,000 ft lbs of energy at 300 yards.
Barnes loads this cartridge with the “Barnes Original.” It’s specially designed for lever-action rifles and revolvers, and uses its semi-jacketed hollow point design to inflict a wide entry wound followed by an even wider wound channel. It’s a tough bullet (despite not having a bonded jacket), so you can rest assured it’ll tunnel deep enough to reach the switch that turns a deer into venison.
