Hornady’s Subsonic line of ammunition makes good on its name! This 45-70 Government cartridge stays well below the speed of sound at 1,075 fps out of a 24 inch barrel, which alongside its low flash propellant supports far more subtle ignition. Great for hunting at night, shooting with a suppressor, or when you just wouldn’t like to make a big fuss.

But this round’s subsonic performance doesn’t make it any less capable of hunting. It features Hornady’s 410 grain Sub-X, a bullet designed to reliably expand even at velocities as low as 900 fps!

The Sub-X has a broad, flat meplat courtesy of its supple Flex Tip. The polymer tip is perched on the rim of the jacket and extends about halfway down the lead core’s underlying nose cavity. Upon impact the tip rams downward to force the core and notched jacket apart for dependable – and deadly – terminal expansion.

The Sub-X is also optimized to retain the weight it needs to penetrate deeply. The specialized low velocity hunting bullet has an InterLock ring and toothed cannelure, both of which extend the jacket into its lead core to keep the two anchored together as they penetrate hide and muscle.

This round’s non-corrosive primer lights up its low flash propellant without leaving caustic salts in its wake, so it will preserve a valuable antique rifle’s insides. Hornady’s fine brass case ought to give neither revolver nor lever action any extraction issues. These rounds’ flat, soft polymer tips are ideal for a tubular magazine!
