But to really appreciate this ammo, you’ll want to load it in a fine lever-action rifle like Henry makes. Heck, Federal even consulted with the old American icon while designing this 44 Mag ammo to make certain it functions smooth as silk in a lever action!

This round’s case geometry is optimized to support effortless feeding in a lever-action rifle. The strong and chamfered case is also nickel plated, reducing how much friction a lever-action feeding mechanism must endure while doing its job. The bullet is optimized for the best terminal performance out of a rifle as well. Again, a handgun will not disappoint, but this is without question the ammo to beat if you hunt like a cowboy.

That ain’t just any ordinary bullet, either. The 270 grain soft point features a bonded jacket. Very little can happen to a bonded jacket that will pry it away from its core, so this bullet retains its weight and remains intact throughout penetration. Consider that a soft point also flattens out to produce a gaping wound channel and you’ll see why whitetail don’t stand a chance against this round. Packs over 1,150 ft lbs of energy at 100 yards, which is well beyond satisfactory for an ethical kill!

Q: The specifications boast an overwhelmingly high muzzle energy at over 1700 ft*lbs. It also says you can fire these out of a revolver, are these rounds marked as +P or +P+ for pressure?

A: Hi David! This ammo is intended for lever-action rifles. As such, Federal Premium recorded its muzzle velocity with a 20" barrel. Most of the time, a 44 Mag's advertised muzzle velocity is recorded with a 6" or 8" barrel. General rule is the longer the barrel, the higher the muzzle velocity: the reason why this standard pressure load only appears to have an abnormally high muzzle velocity.

Q: I shoot a cva scout 44 mag for deer hunting will the 270 gr hammer down bullets perform better or worse shooting from a longer barrel

A: Hi William! I know for a fact that Federal recorded this round's muzzle velocity with a 20" barrel. Stands to reason that's the barrel length they had in mind when they designed the cartridge. That said, I don't expect a longer barrel would affect the bullet's accuracy or terminal ballistics for the worse. I reckon your Scout's barrel is 22". I'd expect no issues, although your firsthand experience is the only thing that ultimately matters.
