“Zee Germans” at SIG Sauer designed this 44 Magnum round solely with self-defense in mind. And with its rather large instance of a 240 grain V-Crown bullet – and of course the incontestable power of a 44 Mag behind it – this cartridge spells bad news for whomever gets on its bad side.

The V-Crown is a highly engineered jacketed hollow point. Its nose cavity actually runs a lot deeper than you can tell from looking at it, and six lateral fissures in the core strategically weaken it to expand wide and along a predetermined axis. The V-Crown’s skived and scored jacket additionally helps determine the exact width that it can expand to, guaranteeing the bullet takes the form of a debilitating six-pointed star as it penetrates soft tissue. (Your attacker will no doubt be made of soft tissue, so this is good.)

The V-Crown holds itself together nicely as it expands so widely. Its jacket’s toothed cannelure doesn’t just prevent setback in the cylinder, but also protrudes into the alloyed lead core. This anchors the V-Crown’s components to one another so they don’t lose a significant portion of their combined weight during penetration, promoting an even deeper wound channel as the result.

This round’s brass case is nickel plated, helping it slide in and out of a revolver’s cylinder with less friction. Its propellant is formulated to produce less light when ignited, a huge benefit if you’d like to fire in the dark without subsequently finding yourself blinded!
