Nosler was founded in Bend, Oregon in 1948, and they remain a family-owned outfit to this day. They’re best known for their Partition and Ballistic Tip bullets, and any devoted varmint slayer probably knows their Varmageddon ammo line well. But Nosler can just as easily put their precision engineering to work to make superlative self-defense ammo – these match grade 40 S&W loads prove it.

This round’s 180 grain bullet is optimized to do two things. The first is fly straight, which it accomplishes with its balanced lead core, concentric copper jacket, and ultra streamlined profile. It only loses only 3.5 percent of its starting velocity at 25 yards, at which point it retains more than adequate energy to do the second thing – deal damage. When the jacketed hollow point meets with resistance from soft tissue, it splays apart to rapidly dump its energy while concurrently registering a wider and wider wound cavity. What more could you ask of a JHP, really?

Nosler pores over this round’s brass case until they’ve ascertained that its length and neck are the correct size, its flash hole is aligned, and it’s trued and chamfered to perfection. Once it receives a consistent propellant charge, sensitive primer, and perfectly seated bullet, it’s cleaned up a little and put in a striking black box. It’s like having a tailor for your handgun’s chamber!
