How is that? Well, for starters, the XD FTM is made of solid copper. That’s why it’s so light. No lead weighs it down. Because copper is harder than lead, it was relatively easy for Lehigh Defense to CNC machine the XD FTM into its distinctive “Phillips head” shape. The radial flutes surrounding the bullet’s tip scoop up soft tissue, pressurize it, and then blast it outward to establish the aforementioned cavernous wound cavity.
The XD FTM doesn’t just punch a wide hole into flesh. It is tough, and retains virtually all of its weight after having passed through a barrier – the key to its deep penetration. It also lacks a nose cavity, which means it can’t fill up with compacted debris that could have impaired its terminal performance. Add in Underwood’s reliable nickel-plated brass case and vision-conserving low-flash propellant, and you’ve got the perfect 40 S&W solution to self-defense on your hands.
