• L - lead. As a “soft cast,” this lead bullet is supple enough to undergo reliable expansion as it pierces soft tissue. It’s too hard to deposit significant fouling, though. Better yet, the bullet’s polymer-based “Black Cherry” coating protects against abrasion and gas cutting.
• SW - semi-wadcutter. This refers to the shape of the bullet. Its base is cylindrical, like a wadcutter’s, and has a shoulder where it transitions to a narrower section. A semi-wadcutter is an excellent choice for defense with the 38 SPL, as its shape leaves it able to inflict a harmful wound channel even if the cartidge’s relatively low muzzle velocity doesn’t allow terminal expansion.
• HP - hollow point. When pressurized soft tissue fills up this bullet’s hollow point nose cavity, the result is terminal expansion. More wounding! More energy transfer! Less risk of over-penetration, too.
• GC - gas check. This is a metal disc at the base of the bullet. It acts as a sort of seal that promotes more efficient ignition.
As always, Underwood’s high-quality 38 SPL defense ammo features low-flash propellant (to conserve the shooter’s night vision) and nickel-plated brass cases (to speed up feeding and extraction, as well as protect against tarnishing). Have a box (by which we mean buy a box)!
