To be sure, this is a 38 Special +P cartridge. Its greater chamber pressure is too powerful for very old 38 Special revolvers, and will produce comparably stronger recoil as well. But that pays off in the form of a faster muzzle velocity – 900 fps out of a 4” vented test barrel, which is sufficient to deliver well over 200 ft lbs of kinetic energy to a threat at close range.
This cartridge’s Hydra-Shok projectile possesses a unique center post in its nose cavity. It helps to promote more reliable terminal expansion at high and low velocities alike. The JHP’s aggressively notched jacket and rugged lead core work in tandem to exhibit precisely the terminal ballistics you want working in your favor during a life-or-death altercation.
Nickel-plated brass cases aren’t necessary for self-defense ammo, but they are a nice thing for it to have. Nickel repels corrosion, and also reduces friction to accelerate loading and extraction. Made in the great state of Minnesota, home to many of the country’s most devoted walleye fishermen.
