Winchester's Train & Defend Line of ammunition provides shooters with a matched pair of training and defense loads, with nearly identical ballistic properties. Keep your 38 Special personal defense firearm's magazine loaded with these "D" (Defense) cartridges and feel confident that you're training will have equipped you with the identical feel and recoil as these jacketed hollow point rounds. Winchester's Train and Defend ammo takes the guesswork out of knowing which cartridges to train with and defend with to best equip you for effectively defending yourself in a life threatening scenario.

This ammunition is new production, non-corrosive, in boxer primed, reloadable nickel plated brass case. Each round is tipped with a 130 grain jacketed hollow point projectile.

Ballistics Test Summary

Ballistic gelatin testing is one way to get an idea of how a self-defense load might perform in a real world self-defense situation. So we fired five rounds of Winchester 130 gr Train & Defend from a Kimber K6s from a distance of 10 feet into a block of synthetic ballistic gel with a barrier of four layers of fabric simulating heavy clothing. We then gathered information on the expansion and penetration characteristics of this load. That data is represented in the chart below.

How this load compares to other .38 Special loads from our tests in regards to bullet expansion and penetration can be found in the diagrams at the bottom of the page.

We also took photos of each bullet that was recovered from the gelatin, seen in the photo slider below. The high speed video shows this round impacting the ballistic gelatin at 10,000 frames per second.

Q: Has the train and defend line been discontinued? Can’t find it anywhere and found a forum post speculating it’s been discontinued.

A: Thanks for reaching out Drew! I'm afraid I can only speculate myself. I have not seen W Train & Defend series ammo on the market recently, that's for sure. But in my personal experience, Winchester doesn't definitively discontinue a product line until they have removed it from their website. The fact that winchester.com/Products/Ammunition/Handgun/W-Train-and-Defend still exists leads me to believe that they haven't officially axed this one. That said, you may rightly assume we're not going to see it again – but there's a chance they'll begin producing it in significant quantities again. I wish I had a definitive answer for you!

Q: Can you tell me the what length barell produced the 900 fps velocity please?
