The 38-40 Winchester (aka 38-40 WCF) has an interesting history. No one knows precisely why Winchester introduced so similar a cartridge to their 44-40 back in 1874. It was originally intended for rifles and was used for deer hunting during the late 19th century, but the 38-40 was more recently embraced as a revolver cartridge by cowboy action shooters. The 38-40 remains something of a rarity, but because they’re headquartered in Montana HSM pretty much has to load any ammo that’s even remotely to do with cowboys!

Don’t look to this round’s bullet for terminal expansion. It is made out of solid, hard lead that emphasizes deep penetration over deformation inside of soft tissue. The round nose flat point profile is aerodynamic yet blunt enough to punch a pleasantly clean hole through a paper target. The bullet’s flat meplat also does a good job transferring its energy to a steel silhouette target to knock it right over.

HSM’s Cowboy Action line of ammunition reliably emulates the recoil and point of aim of old-fashioned loads, but it’s still equipped with smokeless propellant and noncorrosive powder. Reloaders who relish practicing their art on obscure cartridges should leap on this ammo for its new brass cases alone!
