A: Thanks for asking, Derek! One grain, as you may know, is equal to 1/437.5 of an ounce. The more grains a bullet has, the heavier it becomes. When a cartridge has a lighter bullet, it is able to shoot that bullet faster. A lightweight bullet offers better accuracy because it drops less in flight. When a cartridge has a heavier bullet, it shoots that bullet slower. A heavyweight bullet has more momentum up to a certain distance, which enables it to penetrate deeper. I'm simplifiying things a lot, but in general lighter bullet = better accuracy, heavier bullet = more damage. A heavier bullet may also generate greater recoil.
