This cartridge is topped off with a 180 grain bullet. It’s not the heaviest projectile a 357 Mag round can fire, but it occupies the heavier side of the spectrum for sure. The bullet’s muzzle velocity is just a hair faster than supersonic at 1,145 fps, which gives it the momentum it needs to strike with over 500 ft lbs of energy at close range. That’ll do it for personal protection. All you gotta do is aim it right!
The semi-jacketed hollow point bullet is designed to expand wider at lower velocities. Its incomplete jacket gives the SJHP the toughness it needs to penetrate deeply, and also prevents a fair amount of lead from winding up on the rifling. It also leaves the front section of the lead core’s nose cavity unrestricted, which frees it up so it can spread outward more reliably. The SJHP’s nose profile is 100% safe for lever guns, so have at it, cowboy!
