This round owes its deer toppling terminal performance to its soft point bullet. Nothing fancy, but plenty effective with a concentric copper jacket that assists with weight retention for great penetration. The SP bullet’s soft lead core makes up its flat nose, so it transfers decent energy right at the instant of impact followed by significant terminal expansion. And thanks to its 0.245 ballistic coefficient, this bullet maintains a relatively flat trajectory until it plows into its quarry with over 1,000 ft lbs of energy up to around 175 yards!
A Power-Shok round’s brass case is reloadable, so you can bank on this its consistent dimensions and straight-as-a-whistle wall the first, second, and third time you fire it. Although some variation is inevitable, Federal does a good job matching a primer and propellant to produce a steady 2,100 fps muzzle velocity.
