You can still be a good hunter if you’ve never heard of the “soft point cutting edge” projectile. It’s a bit uncommon – but that sure doesn’t mean it can’t take down any buck or bull in the forest. All you need is a 30-06 Springfield rifle if you want to see for yourself!

This round’s bullet has a mushrooming soft point tip. But instead of following a single graceful curved line down to its tail, the jacket profile steps out around center shank. That is the cutting edge, which mechanically locks the jacket and core together to promote higher weight retention and which also stamps a larger, cleaner entry wound than a conventional SP’s ogive could.

Sellier & Bellot captured their 180 grain .30 cal SPCE’s 2,641 muzzle velocity and 0.353 G1 BC with a 23.5” test barrel. By their math, the bullet conserves roughly 73% velocity at 300 yards, at which range it holds around 1,480 ft lbs of kinetic energy.
