Well folks, it looks like Federal made what we refer to in the ammo business as an “oopsie daisy.” Fortunately it’s a harmless oopsie daisy. See, Federal accidentally packaged their American Eagle 223 Rem 62 grain (AE223N) ammo in boxes meant for their American Eagle 223 Rem 55 grain ammo (AE223). So, when you order this ammo and see “55 grain” printed on the box, just know that the cartridges inside really do have 62 grain bullets.

Aside from its packaging, this is Federal’s usual high quality range ammo. Each round sports a 62 grain full metal jacket bullet, with a boat tail base that reduces drag to keep velocities higher as it beelines downrange. This round’s heavier bullet gives it ballistics comparable to the Army’s M855, with a 3,020 fps muzzle velocity and 0.157 G7 ballistic coefficient. And although it is intended for target shooting and other recreational fun, we don’t imagine for a moment that this ammo couldn’t save the day during a home defense situation.

American Eagle is one of the most popular go-to labels we look for when we want to fire our AR-15s. These cartridges ought to run smooth as silk through your semi-auto, and provide extra value thanks to their new brass cases which are reloadable multiple times.
