The Barnaul Cartridge Plant has been in operation since the 19th century. They had to relocate during the Russian Civil War, and then again in 1941 owing to some unpleasantness going on by Russia’s western border. Throughout it all they have never lost their focus – turning out reliable yet cost-effective ammunition.

This 223 Rem cartridge features the steel casing for which Russia is so well known. Steel has less elasticity than brass, and as the result it isn’t reloadable and permits more significant carbon fouling for not sealing the chamber as effectively during ignition. Steel is also significantly less expensive than brass, however, which is why it’s so very popular among shooters who are always on the prowl for a great deal.

This round’s shell casing is coated with friction-reducing polymer. Unlike some lacquer applications, Barnaul’s polymer is formulated to prevent wearing off when it’s superheated in the chamber, promoting a cleaner weapon by the end of a shoot. This round is also equipped with clean burning propellant and a non-corrosive Berdan primer.

Barnaul gave this round a 62 grain full metal jacket boat tail projectile. With its bullet that is seven grains heavier than an M193 round’s, this cartridge’s ballistic performance more closely mimics the U.S. Army’s M855 round. The bullet’s FMJ ensures smooth feeding and a cleaner barrel, yet doesn’t deliver the expanding terminal performance you might seek from a dedicated self-defense round. Finally, the bullet’s tapered base makes it inherently more aerodynamic, enabling it to keep a flatter trajectory and strike its target with relatively greater energy downrange. A potent selection for target practice, all in all, and not remotely unsuitable for personal protection when it comes right down to it.
