Steel-cased ammo is Russia’s great gift to the world. This 223 Rem ammo is not on par with the finest American-made, brass-cased range loads, but it’s an economical and effective way to keep your AR-15 ticking whenever you go to the range.

This cartridge is topped with a 56 grain bullet – not 55 grains, mind you, but 56. You’ll never notice the difference that extra grain makes, but you ought to be aware that this round’s FMJ has a bimetal jacket. That means it’s primarily made of steel. A bimetal jacket makes a bullet more cost-effective, and the steel it contains is too soft to harm a barrel yet too hard to permit deformation that loosens accuracy. The key drawback is that many ranges prohibit magnetic bullets.

MAXXTech’s ammo is usually made with brass cases in Bosnia and Herzegovina, but their Russian-made Essential Steel ammo quite naturally has steel cases. This ammo’s near-total lack of copper is the key reason for its agreeable price tag, though the impossibility of reloading steel cases means you’ll have no incentive to pick up whatever your rifle spits out while you’re working through this 1,000-round case.
