Hornady did not load this cartridge with one of their trademark projectiles. It is a traditional 55 grain soft point, although it still exhibits the outstanding quality which the old Nebraskan manufacturer is famous for. The soft point features a hard jacket that prevents terminal fragmentation and accordingly promotes effectively deep penetration. Its exposed lead core enables the bullet to widen out and tumble around as it bores into its target, thus creating a wound cavity that is significantly wider in diameter than a mere 0.224”.
Hornady loads this cartridge to produce a 3,240 fps muzzle velocity out of a 24” barrel. At that rate it should retain at least 1,000 ft lbs of energy until about 90 yards, making it a close-range solution for deer hunting at best. The projectile will retain sufficient energy for self-defense applications beyond 500 yards, and its trajectory crests at approximately 3” when it is bound for a 200-yard bullseye. (0.235 G1 ballistic coefficient)
This American-made ammo is loaded with factory fresh brass cases, noncorrosive Boxer primers and low-residue propellant. 223 Rem ammunition is compatible with 5.56x45 firearms, including AR-style rifles.
