A: Thanks for reaching out Elvira! The Remington Express 20ga #3 buck shell has a muzzle velocity of 1,220 feet per second (fps). The Remington Ultimate Defense 20ga #3 buck shell has a muzzle velocity of 1,140 fps. Essentially, the Ultimate Defense shell's buckshot won't strike the target with the same amount of force. Now, to be very certain, the Ultimate Defense load transfers more than sufficient kinetic energy to its target for self-defense applications. But thanks to its lower muzzle velocity, the Ultimate Defense shell also generates less recoil energy. Less recoil means the barrel won't jerk upward quite as much after you pull the trigger. As the result, it's easier to keep your aim trained on the target, which facilitates rapid, accurate fire – a great advantage when the target means to do you immediate bodily harm. That's the key difference between the two rounds.
