Its lighter column of shot generates relatively little little recoil energy, even in light of its healthy muzzle velocity. #8 shot is small and patterns densely, ensuring a spread that kills delicate birds without rendering them unrecognizable.
Because it is made of chilled lead, this shot contains only about two percent antimony. That makes it hard enough to resist flattening down during ignition, but also able to deform a little as it penetrates soft tissue. That makes its terminal performance all the more suitable for quail and their ilk.
