A: Hi Mike. Glad to hear you're getting the wife interested in shooting! Those full speed sluggers are going to have a pretty hefty recoil for a new shooter. I think you are on the right path moving her to the 20 gauge shot-shells. They will be MUCH less recoil than a full power 12 gauge slug. The felt recoil is a factor of three things, the weight and design of the gun, the weight of the projectile, and finally the velocity of the projectile. They will each effect the felt recoil independently. If you have a heavier semi-auto shotgun, it will shoot milder than a lighter pump action, across the entire spectrum of ammo, because of the weight and energy soaked up by the shotgun action. This means that you can defeat your purposes by buying a lighter or "youth" sized 20 gauge. Your 20 gauge does have some lighter weight slugs so they may move a bit faster, but will not generate more recoil. Perfect for your needs.
