This round’s bullet is built similarly to the Hornady V-MAX. Its polymer tip’s base stops just shy of the bottom of the nose cavity. That lets the tip build up momentum for an instant after impact. When the polymer meets the lead, aggressive expansion and fragmentation follow. It’s a straightforward sequence of events that culminates in varmint kablooey.

The 17 WSM truly throws its bullet hard. It may be itty-bitty at 20 grains, but the polymer tipped projectile really zoots out that barrel. That’s why this round’s muzzle energy is about the same as a hot 9mm self-defense load’s, and its drop at 150 yards is -1.2” (100 yard zero; 1.5” high sights).
