As one of the smallest shot sizes, #9 is only suitable for clay targets and very small birds. The most popular shell for home defense is 00 buck, which has 0.33" diameter pellets that are effective against deer and human-sized targets. Just note that in general a faster muzzle velocity conveys greater recoil, and 00 buck is more prone to penetrating walls to potentially put bystanders in jeopardy.
