A: Hi Darrell! We're not as well stocked as usual owing to the ongoing ammo drought. I'd normally recommend Federal FliteControl 00 buckshot (PFC154 00) as one of the best choices for self-defense, but you'll likely have difficulty finding that right now. We haven't got anything more powerful than bird hunting shotgun ammo in stock for the time being, but that's likely to change shortly. Please check in again soon to see if we have 00 buck ammo in stock for you – that's really what you want for personal protection!

A: An interesting question! As a general rule, as shorter barrel issues a louder report. That's because there is relatively higher residual pressure when the wad/shot unseals the barrel. Now, would this hold true when there is no wad/shot effectively sealing pressure in? Have a look at this academic article: ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC4617326/. It is dealing with starter pistols, but it states "sound levels may also be increased due to the use of plugged barrels, short barrels and open chambers/cylinders in starter pistols." It's not an apples to apples comparison, but it does suggest that a shorter barrel indeed may issue a louder report with blank ammo.
