00 buckshot is typically made out of dense and economical lead. But lead creates a significant risk of injury when you’re shooting steel targets, as the metal has a tendency to ricochet back when it hits a hard surface. Getting peppered with hot flecks of lead is about as fun as it sounds.

This 12 Gauge shotshell from Federal’s BallistiClean line of ammunition solves that problem. Intended for law enforcement professionals but available to the public, this shell’s nine pellets of 00 buck are frangible. Frangible buck disintegrates when it hits a hard surface to virtually abolish painful splash-back.

This shell is even better for training indoors because it contains no lead. Its frangible buck won’t erupt into toxic dust when it strikes a hard surface, and its Catalyst primer is similarly lead-free. Federal’s Catalyst primer is very high-tech, sparking up hot to light nearly all of its propellant simultaneously and so shelf-stable it pretty much can not go bad when stored correctly.

Outside of training, frangible buck is most frequently used for home defense. Sure, this shell’s shot pellets are less dense than lead, and accordingly transfer less energy on impact. They’re still remarkably potent at a muzzle velocity of 1,600 fps, however, and the fact that they are less likely to penetrate several walls makes them preferable for home defense where neighbors and bystanders are likely to be present in neighboring rooms and apartments.
