This 12 Gauge shell is loaded with a one ounce Foster style slug. Also known as the “American Slug,” it features a deep hollow set into its base. This distributes more of the slug’s weight toward its tip to give it greater stability in flight. The slug is designed to function ideally in a smoothbore shotgun, and has riflings on its side that lessen how much it comes into contact with the bore. (Contrary to their appearance, this slug’s riflings don’t cause it to spin in flight.)
This round’s slug is propelled down the barrel by a compression style wad, which seals the bore for more efficient ignition. The slug achieves a 1,600 fps muzzle velocity through a 24” barrel as the result, and retains 965 ft lbs of energy at 100 yards. That energy alone would devastate a deer, but this hollow point slug’s ability to expand enormously within soft tissue only makes it deadlier.
Hornady’s extruded plastic hull, concentric brass head, fast and clean burning propellant, and extremely responsive primer all perfectly complement so potent a slug. Your duck gun can easily become your buck gun when you’ve got a case of this ammo, and you’d be quite the impediment to any home intruder intent on doing you harm as well.
