Hornady designs their American Gunner line of ammunition to promote smooth compatibility with the greatest range of firearms. Whatever your shotgun’s barrel length and however its action operates, you should find that this 12 Gauge ammo will get along with it swimmingly.

This shell’s solid lead slug is rifled for safe passage through any type of muzzle choke. Its muzzle velocity of 1,300 fps lets the one ounce slug transfer more than 1,600 ft lbs of energy at close range. That is simply devastating for home defense. At 50 yards the slug’s energy remains greater than 1,000 ft lbs, which is still within the range considered ethical for hunting whitetail.

Hornady gave this shell a compression-style wad. It seals the bore throughout ignition to promote a consistent muzzle velocity and resultant ballistic performance. It also protects the slug against deformation for greater accuracy. A compression wad offers the additional benefit of reducing recoil; if you’d ever use this ammo for home defense, you’ll appreciate having less muzzle flip to deal with as you’re lining up your follow-up shots.

One final thing: As a rifled slug, this ammo is intended for smoothbore shotguns only. It can potentially damage a rifled bore. Sounds counterintuitive, we know, but that’s the naming system we wound up with!
