We get to write about a lot of different kinds of ammunition in our line of work. We regularly throw around words like “powerful,” “crushing,” “walloping,” and “devastating,” but we never thought we’d see the day when we call a shell “cute.” But here you have it: The adorable 12 Gauge Shorty Shotshell by Federal, only 1 3/4 inches long!

But looks can be deceiving. This shell’s one ounce rifled slug rockets out of a muzzle at 1,200 fps. That’s faster than the speed of sound, and it packs nearly 1,400 ft lbs of muzzle energy because of it. That’s more powerful than a 44 Magnum, so this slug is beyond adequate for hunting medium-sized game and personal defense.

This shell may be small, but Federal packs big value into it. Its roll-crimped plastic hull and brass head will ignore whatever abuse they’re subjected to, and its primer and propellant ignite both cleanly and in an instant. You can fit more of these shells than you could full-sized ones in a pump-action’s tubular magazine, although please note that they may cause feeding issues in incompatible weapons, such as semi-autos.
