#8 lead shot is a popular round for target shooting, whether we’re talking paper, skeet or trap. It’s not a viable hunting round except against small birds at close ranges; the shot pattern disperses quickly beyond about 30 yards and the pellets simply won’t penetrate big birds like turkey. It’s capable of taking small game like squirrels, but you’ll often find the meat filled with tiny shot pellets. If you want to hunt with small shot, try #7.5 lead shot.
