I hear that cry of underpowered loud and clear. We who have the 10mm's, went for their potential for sure. Like many, I got mine for woods and hunting. And if I can have some of my firearms pull double duty, I think that's a win.
Here's what I am liking about this load. I am an avid shooter of 9 & 40 and have both for self defence. I carry widely accepted commercial name self defence loads for that purpose ( Speer & Federal ). Recently I have gone to a 10mm for woods carry, after backpacking in Griz and wolf territory. I realized I needed to "up it" a bit for larger dangerous game, and wanted more than 6 rounds, so 10mm in a semi auto fit the bill for me.
As we all know, 10mm can be a powerhouse in many loads. Who wouldn't want that for general self defence as well? But, just food for thought from another angle; The "stigma" of 10mm , and self defence use of firearms these days. Everyone is super critical of everything. No denying, justification is justification. But I can see where things could get sideways in a courtroom with a not so well informed jury, and a overzealous prosecutor.
( you could see where that could go).
But if you articulate your shooting platform was a firearm capable of shooting higher powered 10mm in hunting and woods carry, yet you "downgraded" to a cartridge that is very close to standard .40 caliber self defence power that the local police carry, you may be in much better light in that scenario. ( Speer Gold Dot .40 in this same load : 180 gr/1025 fps/420 ft-lb & the sister Federal, .40 180gr, 1000 fps/400 ft-lb ).
In my opinion, this make the 10mm a super versatile round. One pistol to practice with for hunting, target shooting, and self defence. Of course most of us will have a host of different pistols. But with different loads, the 10mm can articuably fill a few roles. And with these Federal loads that are on the "light side", yet still no slouch, are good self defence rounds without being looked at as a "Dirty Harry" type by the uninformed.
If you get in a jam while out in the woods.....it is what it is in that case. But for general EDC, I think this is a great choice to switch back to when away from the woods or hunting needs.
Just my opinion, and food for thought. Carry on & be safe.
